AFCO will begin development and construction management services of a new Fixed Base Operation (FBO) in the Business Aviation Center to be built at Pittsburgh International Airport. The team of AFCO, led by Frank Chambers and American Port Services (AMPORT) was selected by Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1997 to develop the FBO. AMPORT of Teterboro, New Jersey is one of the largest private airport, seaport and automotive processing facilities operators in the United States and will be handling the leasing and management of the FBO. AFCO will be developing two hangars at the FBO and will oversee the construction of AMPORT development of the remaining FBO facilities. Baker and Associates of Caraopolis, Pennsylvania is the architect for the FBO, which will total over 107,000 square feet and include a passenger terminal, flex office building, 2 hangars and a vehicle maintenance facility. The site will also have 375,000 square feet of apron. Construction will begin in the Fall of 1999 and is expected to be completed by the 4th quarter of 2000.
AFCO and Allegheny County have also executed documents agreeing to AFCO’s purchase of leaseholds on three cargo buildings that AFCO has been managing since 1995. The buildings total over 180,000 square feet of warehouse space and over 450,000 square feet of apron space. Tenants include Airborne Express, Federal Express, United Airlines, United Parcel Service, the United States Postal Service and USAirways.
In conjunction with the signing of the purchase agreement, Allegheny County has given AFCO the right to develop a new Aviation Cargo Complex. The Complex can accommodate 250,000 square feet to be developed in phases. The first phase of the project planned is a 50,000 square foot warehouse and office facility expected to be completed in 2002. The Business Aviation Center and the Aviation Cargo Complex will occupy the site of the Old Terminal Building which was demolished. AFCO is also discussing with Allegheny County the development of trucking facilities at another site on the Airport
